Editorial Note
Dear Readers,
With this issue, Studies in Indian Politics (SIP) completes 10 years. As mentioned previously, we are
happy about the global attention SIP is getting and the warm response from academics who specialize in
different branches of what can broadly be described as Indian politics.
Since the last issue, our effort has also been to present the readers with special sections that more
directly address fundamental issues that need reminder and more discussion on the occasion of the 75th
anniversary of India’s independence. The last issue focused on the questions of religion, identity and
citizenship. In this issue, we have put together three essays that focus on the Indian state. We are grateful
to the authors Partha Chatterjee, Pranab Bardhan and Anupama Roy for acceding to our request and
giving their essays for this section. We hope that these essays will prod students of Indian politics to
undertake further empirical and theoretical work on the Indian state.
