and consequences of labour migration, migration induced by climate change,
asylum and integration of migration into host societies, etc. Under the five
broad objectives of SAMC, which include easing the hardship of migrants from
member countries, the commission will seek to put forward a comprehensive
policy options for the governments of South Asia and other stakeholders.
This book is a must read for anybody interested in South Asia which as a
region is undergoing a metamorphosis during the times of globalization. Migration
has become an important aspect of global economic integration and as sketched
out in many chapters of this book remittance is changing the way people across
many countries live their daily life. The country studies collected in the volume
show that in spite of the large number of people moving outside their borders in
search of work and contributing through remittances, there is a failure on the part
of the governments to bring out credible and consistent policies with regard to the
issues faced by the migrants. The book also highlights the limited regional coop-
eration achieved with regard to migration flows and protection of migrant work-
ers in spite of having a regional body called SAARC, which has left out migration
issues from its agenda. One of the notable achievements of the compendium is
that for the first time three countries—Maldives, Bhutan and Afghanistan—which
play a major role in migration in south Asia have been included in the review of
migration and development issues in South Asia. These studies document and
highlight the challenges and opportunities of migration and fill the gap in existing
migration literature. Finally the book highlights the importance of policies and
SAMC will be a guiding light for policy makers to understand and implement
suitable policy guidelines for the future.

India as an Asia Pacific Power by David Brewster is an important work in the
field of Asian studies. It makes a significant contribution by communicating in
an organized manner the plethora of opinion and analysis already in existence
in this area. For those analysts and officials who are concerned with security in
the Asian region it provides an excellent grounding and foundation for under-
standing India’s role in this dynamic and rapidly changing region. With the US
pivot towards Asia this enables students, scholars and politicians alike to buffer
against the rise of China by promoting the further rise of India as an Asia
Pacific power.
