Abstract
This article is divided into three major segments. The initial section offers a
concise overview of the requisite data protection laws in India, aiming to regu-
late and oversee the collection, processing and utilisation of personal data. The
second section delves into an in-depth examination of the Digital Personal Data
Protection Act, 2023 (the Act), accompanied by illustrative examples and its
scope of applicability. The concluding part presents an analysis of the Act, focus-
ing on its efforts and challenges in safeguarding wide reach as well as its implica-
tions for rural populations.

Introduction
Businesses gather personal data, and on occasions, they have traded such infor-
mation without obtaining the consent of their consumers. However, legislations
have been enacted in various regions globally to safeguard individuals. As late as
2018, Guidelines and Rules under the General Data Protection Regulation were
enforced in the European Union. Prior to this, the European Data Protection
Directive, 1995, was designed for safeguarding the personal data. According to
this legislation, companies are obligated to safeguard consumer data and disclose
how the information is being utilised. This legal framework possesses extensive
