ROLE OF POLICE FORCE IN MAINTAINING SOCIAL
ORDER
J.P. MISHRA
The
article not only deals with the functioning
of
the Police
in India
and
its historical background, it
al~o
explains the
challenges
and
impediments before the Police Force.
It
is
further commensurated with the changing scenario
of
the
society which now faces multidimensional crime within and
outside the national boundary.
The
presence
of
various human
rights activists, in one form or another
and
the challenge
to
bring reforms
in
the present police forces in India which. by

of
a sovereign government
so that the common man remains protected from all unforeseen eventualities.
Since the time immemorial, the need
of
the police was felt notwithstanding
the fact that the form
of
government changed from, kingship to democracy,
autocracy to dictatorship and capitalism to socialism. In the Rigveda police
is mentioned as Jivagriha, during the Mauryan period it was Anatpal and
Gramini, during the medieval period it was Sikdar and Fojdar. In 1600
AD
the East India Company established the police department which was one
of
the sister organisations for collecting revenue. The modem police came
into existence during the period
of
Warren Hastings who separated the
police from the judiciary and the post
of
Collector and District Magistrate
