Internal disturbances
and
high crime rates prove detrimental
to the economic health
of
a nation.

the present times, the
nations
facing
such
problems are incurring huge
public
expenditure on maintaining defence
and
internal security.
The
present article is an attempt to examine the intensity
of
crime
under various categories (!PC, SLL & Violent Crimes)
and
to
develop
a
comparative
study
among
crime
and
police
expenditure
in
different states
of
India over a period
of
analysis
(2000-2012) using Karl Pearson
3'
coefficient
of
correlation.
In India Police expenditure
had
a ve1y high correlalion with
!PC
crimes (to the extent
of
0.
940). whereas low correlation
with Special
and
Local Laws (SLL) crimes (to the extent
of
0.267)
and
negative correlation with violent crimes (to the
extent
of
-0.225). The expenditure on police forces in India
had
been appropriately allocated among various standard
heads
of
expenditures (SOE)
asjor
the most part ii is successful
in controlling violent crime
of
heinous nature, which should
be
of
highest priority
of
any police force.
INTRODUCTION
CRIME
IS
an
intentionally committed illegal act. It
is
an act forbidden and
punished by law, which
is
always immoral and harmful to society according
to the prevailing ethical standards. Various factors such as political and
religious ideologies, density and composition
of
populatio:·1, d
istribu~ion
of
wealth, the extent
of
employment; racial characteristics, social customs,
castes and communal differences, alcoholism, drug addiction and mental
disturbance exercise an influence on the incidence
of
crimes. Internal
disturbances and high crime rates prove detrimental to the economic health
of
a nation.
It

in

of
economic development.
