Introduction
Historical analogies play a signicant role in shaping public administration
in India. It provides insights from past experiences which help in present-day
decision-making and policy formulation. This article explores the relevance
of historical analogies in the context of Indian public administration, focusing
on key historical events, policies and movements that continue to inuence
governance strategies and administrative practices. The article examines the
Five-Year Plans, Panchayati Raj system, green revolution and economic liberali-
sation to explain their implications in the contemporary governance challenges.
The article highlights the importance of understanding past events, successes and
failures to address current governance issues eectively. The historical analogies
help in providing valuable lessons to deal with present challenges and foster
sustainable development of inclusive governance in the future.
The word ‘analogy’ is dened as a comparison between one thing and
another, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarication. In a historical
sense, it is dened as the comparison between events or phenomena in the past
and those in the present or future. In the context of public administration in
India, historical analogies can be drawn from the country’s own rich history and
experiences to compare similarities between past events, policies or strategies
and current situations. They can help policymakers and administrators under-
stand complex issues, anticipate outcomes and develop eective solutions. They
provide insights and make predictions to better understand current events by
examining how similar circumstances happened in dierent historical contexts
to improve governance in the past and the present. They also provide a better
understanding of how dierent political systems, policies and leadership styles
have functioned in the past. By comparing past governance structures
and practices with those of the present, policymakers can gain a better
