With this issue of Studies in Indian Politics (SIP), the journal enters its fourth year. We hope that
students of Indian politics will continue to support the journal through readership, subscriptions and,
above all, their academic contribution.
This issue of SIP is a special issue jointly edited by K.C. Suri, David Hundt and Carolyn Elliott,
focusing on political parties and democracy in India. The theme of parties and their relationship to
governance and democracy is central to the understanding of democratic politics, and we believe that
the contributions in this issue would enrich the debate over this theme. We thank the Guest Editors for
their support in bringing out this issue.
