It was in 2013, I was in Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal) for an academic work and sud-
denly the havoc occurred. The Uttarakhand tragedy changed my view of life
towards disasters. Soon enough I had developed an interest in this area at large. I
dedicated myself to the present disaster management and strategies in India in
relation to the United Nations’ agenda of Sustainable Development Goals. In the
same context, I came across a volume with a future vision; in fact, it is a part of a
series of edited volumes, that is, Disaster Research and Management Series on
the Global South.
The focus of the book, titled Disaster Management for 2030 Agenda of the
SDG, is mainly on the disasters and the sustainable development goals. This book
is an edited volume containing research work of various scholars working and
dedicating their life towards disasters redressal, management and sustainabil-
ity. This book gives a clear understanding of disaster and how to handle it from
various future perspectives. International research scholars from all around the
global south have made their research contribution to make it complete. The book
has a message from Professor (Dr) Amita Singh, the series editor, and an introduc-
tory message from Sri V.K. Malhotra (Member Secretary, ICSSR, New Delhi).
Overview
The 22 chapters in this volume, including the introductory chapter by Professor
(Dr) V.K Malhotra, are produced by the scholars from different fields. This
volume has been divided into three sections: (a) ‘Concerns About Law and
Governance’, (b) ‘Concern About Sectoral Policies’ and (c) ‘SDGs and the Covid-
19 Challenge’.
The series editor Professor (Dr) Amita Singh in the ‘Preface’ sets the context
of this volume, analysing and suggesting that the impact of disasters and their
management is of utmost importance; how a disaster can bring down the devel-
opment of many years; and how the situation can be difficult for sustainability.
In the introduction chapter, Professor Dr V.K. Malhotra states about the importance of
