including a memoir by Gyalo Thondup, who was the key player in this relation-
ship (Thondup & Thurston, 2016). Consequently, the author fails to answer why
the United States initially agreed with Taiwan for a joint operation in Tibet and
later declined the proposal (p. 84–85). Besides, there is also a lack of theoretical
or methodological considerations that could significantly contribute to approaches
for international relations studies.
Overall, despite the limitations, Lin’s latest book serves as valuable reading for
anyone who engages in the geopolitics of the Asia-Pacific region. It provides
some intriguing archival information in understanding the nuances of complex the
United States and Taiwan relations and the larger geopolitics of the Asia-Pacific
region. With the increasing interest in Taiwan as one of the largest chip manufac-
turers and its implication on the geopolitics of the region, the book became an
even more relevant and important reading.

Why Bharat Matters is the second book of Dr S Jaishankar, a distinguished former
diplomat and the serving Foreign Minister of India. Published at a crucial time of
the 2024 General Elections in India, the book gives an insight into the decade of
foreign policy conduit under the Modi Government to the domestic and interna-
tional public. Jaishankar highlights a few key issues that the world is facing today
from an Indian perspective. First, the world order is increasingly fragmented,
exacerbating the conventional and non-conventional security issues that exist.
Second, the challenges India faces, including security issues, domestic develop-
mental issues and China as a geopolitical and military challenge on borders and
in the region. Considering these aspects, Jaishankar argues in subsequent book
chapters that India should focus on developing an independent and unique model
based on its Indic (or Bharatiya) civilisation to fulfil its national interests and to
serve a global public good.
