It highlights Vietnam’s multiple development challenges and encourages readers to
think deeper about their origin. It emphasises a fresh perspective on the country’s
trajectory based on Vietnam’s capability to fully capitalise on opportunities from the
new geopolitical era while avoiding fallouts. As such, this edited volume will be of
great help to any followers of Vietnam and Southeast Asian geopolitics.

The world is witnessing an ever-confident and active Chinese Navy operating
from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean and beyond. After decades of focus on the
continental landmass, the Chinese Navy has finally prioritised the sea domain
in its strategic calculus. China’s security, prosperity and influence depend upon
the Navy’s ability to operate globally and secure Chinese ‘interests’. Michael
McDevitt’s China as a Twenty-first-century Naval Power: Theory, Practice, and
Implications is an exceptional addition to the cornucopia of scholarships on
China’s maritime strategy. McDevitt is a retired rear admiral with a 34-year career
in the US Navy and a 30-year experience with the US security policy and strategy
in Asia under the Office of the Secretary of Defense. His professional experience
combined with 18 months of rigorous research led to this salutary work.
This book traces China’s odyssey from a ‘green-water’ to a ‘blue-water’ navy,
capable of defending Chinese ‘interests’ overseas by operating far from home
