‘Geography is about maps and History is about chaps’, might appear as a light-
hearted remark by E.L. Bentley. However, this is how history is taught at many
places. In Maharashtra, the Standard IV textbook on history was completely
dedicated to the life and achievements of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. History is
often taught as biographies of great men, their victories over their opponents
along with some information about their childhood as to how they grew into
famous persons. History, as taught in schools, rarely discusses the economic
conditions of the common people, the technological attainments, or the financial
factors that influenced ancient or medieval battles and wars.
Making India Great Again: Learning from our History is a unique book written
by an IAS ofcer Meeta and her professor husband Rajivlochan. They discuss the
economic factors that led to the ultimate victory of the East India Company
