The study has addressed in limited manner empowerment impacts on women and
welfare impacts on children. Similarly, the procedural aspects of implementation
have not been given attention; the impacts are inseparable from implementation.
Perhaps, the design of the study restricted the scope.

The book, State Politics in India, edited by Roy, Singh and Chouhan is a well-
researched, insightful and well-compiled volume. Discussing numerous aspects
of politics in twenty-seven states and two union territories, it is quite comprehen-
sive and covers all important aspects of state politics.
Since there is a dearth of literature on the subject, this volume will be an
important contribution to the existing literature. The series of scholars who have
worked on the theme of state politics in the past comprises Myron Weiner, lqbal
Narain, John R. Wood, Atul Kohli, T.J. Nossiter, Francine R. Frankel and M.S.A.
Rao, John Harriss, B.S. Minhas, L.R. Jain and S.D. Tendulkar, Gaurav Datta and
Martin Ravallion, V.S. Vyas and Pradeep Bhargava, Rob Jenkins, Aseema Sinha,
Mahendra Prasad Singh, Bhikhu Parekh, T.H. Marshall, Will Kymlicka and
Wayne Norman, Rob Jenkins, Stephen Howes, Ashok Lahiri and Nicholas Stern,
Swaminathan A. Aiyar, Bibek Debroy, Subhradipta Sarkar and Archana Sharma,
Amaresh Bagchi and John Kurian, Mark Robinson and Gordon White, Sudipto
Mundle, Francine R. Frankel, etc. The hitherto available literature focused mainly
on one or the other aspect of state politics. The study of provincial politics or
native states in British India has been an underdeveloped area.
This book, edited by Roy, Singh and Chouhan, illustrates the hitherto favourite
areas concerning political configurations, and at the same time covers the historical-
geographical, socio-cultural and political-economic contexts. The historical–
geographical illustration of state politics, in this volume, dates back to British–
Indian provinces, which were largely eclipsed by the nationalist movement
politics. It is asserted that the state politics in India began in the last decade of
the 19th century with the demands of a federal polity premised on the principle
