Water Tax Dispute Spreads to Sector V [Kolkata ]


KOLKATA: Can the water tax issue ever be free of controversies? From the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, it now seems to be spreading to the state's most sought after IT address, Sector V.

Tech firms in the area are cut up with the draft agreement sent to them in this regard by the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) which has administrative jurisdiction over the IT hub.

Companies allege that the document sent by NDITA is vague on what constitutes a "connection charge" that they would have to pay Nabadiganta Water Management Ltd (a special purpose vehicle formed by JUSCO & Voltas) which is responsible for the development and management of water distribution and a sewerage system at Sector V.

The firms assert they are unclear whether the supposed connection charge is to be taken as payment for installing a water meter at their premises to measure consumption. Another sore point of theirs is the one-time non-refundable payment at the rate of Rs 10 per sq ft of built-up space.
