Outside: A nondescript, rather dilapidated apartment building from the 70s, one of the many such edifices dotting Mumbai's Altamount Road. Inside: an open space, contemporary in look and feel. Creating a new house from scratch is one thing, pulling a modern pad out of an old shell is quite another. But then, that's exactly what a young couple moving back to Mumbai from London desired. They had gotten used to a certain style of living there and wanted to replicate it back home. That's when they turned to architect Rajiv Saini, the man who executes heritage projects like Devigarh Fort and urban layouts with equal lan.

That the house is a labour of love is evident- both in the way the architect has handled his creative canvas and in the way the young residents have envisaged it. Of course, it helped that Saini already shared a rapport with the lady of the house. "We have known each other for many years in a professional and personal capacity. So it was easier to understand how they wanted their home to be," he says.
