The Promise of Small

Despite 30 per cent of Indians living in urban areas, there are millions of people in small towns who don't fancy the bright lights of big cities. Sure, the metros offer better jobs and more money, but unless you are in the top echelons and, therefore, more equipped with devices of material comfort, life is likely to be very tough. While you may work in the big city, you probably live far away from it; spend hours commuting to and fro, live in localities where power, water, sanitation and other basic needs of life are in poor condition. As with most things in life, there's an implicit trade- off in the big city-small city choice. Choosing the former means, perhaps, better career prospects, but worse quality of life, while the decision to stay on in a small town is prompted by a desire to put quality of life ahead of career and wealth.
