KOLKATA The well-heeled might not consider it much of a style statement to have a Rs 1-lakh Tata Nano in their garage, but how about a Rs 1-lakh Mamata Banerjee in their living rooms? The Trinamool Congress chief--who has also penned many Bengali books on herself--is currently holding the second exhibition of her paintings at the Ashutosh Hall of the Indian Museum in Kolkata. And the price of each of the 45 paintings, significantly, is Rs 1 lakh, minus any surcharges that automobile buyers have to pay. Banerjee has not clarified whether the show is a reaction to the Nano launch in Delhi last week, but the price tag and the timing say it all.
Titled Mamata: 25 Hours In A Day, Chapter Two, the paintings with bold brush strokes and childlike simplicity explore themes closest to the politician-artist's heart--images of Goddess Kali at Kalighat and people symbolising farmers and rural women. The Trinamool Congress symbol, a flower and grass shoots, appears in a variety of complicated avatars as flowers, paddy shoots, open fields and trees. The colours are vivid--bright greens, blues, reds, ochres, gold and silver.See the full content of this document
