DELHI He claimed it was just a social visit but when NCP chief Sharad Pawar dropped in to meet Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray at his Mumbai home for over an hour, it was hard to ignore the political nuances. Incidentally, the visit occurred in the backdrop of Shiv Sena-turned-Congressman Narayan Rane's recent and rather blatant bid for chief ministership of Maharashtra.
Lashing out at Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's style of functioning, Rane had claimed that his rule benefited "only one person". Rane was summoned to 10 Janpath but the rap on his knuckles was a mild one. He was told that Margaret Alva, general secretary in- charge of the state, would handle the matter.
