The only thing that can be better than winning a lottery is getting a full scholarship to the college of your dreams. Alas, such windfall gains are few and far in between. And unless you have a rich parents on your side, you will have to fund yourself by combining partial scholarships, loans and on-campus jobs, "I got partial funding from the Tata trust, which will cover my tuition fee. The rest I will have to generate through part time jobs. I can work 15 hours a week," explains Pavithra Selvam, who will begin her M.Sc. in Global Media and Communications at London School of Economics this year.

Although, there are several international and domestic scholarship trusts, only a handful offer the entire tuition and living cost. So it makes sense to apply to as many scholarships as possible. Most of them have their deadlines between December and April, so you would have to work on them along with your college applications. Often students do not devote as much time to the scholarship essay as they would do to the statement of purpose required by a college, and this is where the biggest mistake lies.
