On July 25, the day after Parliament began the monsoon session, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who turned 77, was greeted by all sections of the House in wishing him a happy birthday and a long life. Looking down from the speaker's podium, he told the MPs, "thank you but I hope life isn't really that long."
The bonhomie did not last very long. Last week, when MPs from the BJP and its NDA allies ran to the well of the House shouting slogans against the Congress and the UPA Government, Chatterjee, a Parliament veteran for over 35 years, said, "I'm ashamed to be here now."
