Heard of a city called Port Moresby? Most people would find it difficult to trace it on a map. Located in the southwest Pacific island of Papua New Guinea, its biggest connection with India is that its capital happens to have an Indian diplomatic mission functioning from a luxury hotel despite the bilateral relations being abysmally low.

But the annual tab for the mission here is more than Rs 1 crore. While Port Moresby may be on the chopping board it is just the tip of iceberg. There are countless such Indian missions which have become white elephants. Now a rightsizing exercise being undertaken by the MEA aims at optimising its resources and shedding flab. "We felt that some of the missions were not required whereas representations in areas such as Africa and Latin America needed to be enhanced and for that a review is being done," says a senior MEA official.
