DELHI The approaching assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh have brought out the inherent contradictions of the Communist parties. Earlier this year, meetings of "socialist" parties in the state used to hit the headlines because Chief Minister Mulayam Singh would be seen with CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and his CPI counterpart A.B. Bardhan. A lot seems to have changed which forced the CPI's state unit to ask its central leadership to reconsider its closeness with Mulayam.
