The only state government-owned oil and gas company in India to secure exploration licences in four foreign countries, among them Australia and Egypt, the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited (GSPC) is an example of what a state government PSU can do. Boasting of huge oil reserves under its belt in the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin, it has ushered in a minor revolution by setting up India's first-ever state-level gas grid. Thanks to GSPC'S strides in the oil and gas sector, it is today known as the company with the golden touch. The Gandhinagar-based company was visualised by an IAS officer H.K. Khan in 1989 and developed by another IAS officer, Sanjay Gupta, in the late 1990s. It has taken a giant leap forward under its present Managing Director D.J. Pandian who took over in 2001 after having worked in the World Bank.
