On a hot sultry afternoon in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa steps out of the guest house and boards her customised air-conditioned van. Her cavalcade moves slowly through the crowded streets of this lively town in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district. Maddening chants of "long live Puratchi Thalaivi" (revolutionary leader) rent the air as thousands throng just to get a passing glimpse of the charismatic "Amma", as she is fondly called. Two leaves, the AIADMK election symbol, and large cut-outs of MGR and Jayalalithaa can be seen all over the place. As her cavalcade gains momentum, Jayalalithaa tries desperately to strike a chord with the voters in this AIADMK bastion.

Another van is following Jayalalithaa's closely. But while hers is fitted with mikes and flashlights, this one is an open vehicle, carrying the local party candidate. His hands are folded, and his lips are sealed because it is Amma who does all the talking.
