Every day Chennai produces 4,000 tonnes of garbage that rots on the roads and in the lanes, choking drains and posing a hazard to life besides being an eyesore. But the three municipalities of Alandur, Pallavaram and Tambaram in south Chennai have found a way to deal with this evergrowing problem. They will recycle garbage in a traditional yet scientifically sound way. As Tambaram Municipality Chairman E. Mani, 52, says, "This integrated solid waste management project is the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu." Approximately 250 tonnes of garbage is generated in these municipalities everyday- Alandur (80 tonnes), Pallavaram (86 tonnes) and Tambaram (78 tonnes). The garbage is collected through primary collection. The municipalities insist on segregation at the source. After materials like plastic are sent for recycling, organic waste is used for vermi composting and the remaining solid waste is used as landfill.
