Coalition politics defies conventional wisdom, and invisible forces work to balance equations of power, sometimes apparent, sometimes cloaked. If there was any doubt that the centre of power no longer lies at the Centre, it was dispelled last year, with the Congress engaged in a full-on face-off on everything from disinvestment of white-elephant PSUs to the acquisition of land for SEZs, from the passage of the landmark Indo-US nuclear deal to reservations in educational institutions.
