There should have been celebrations at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to commemorate 50 years of its existence. Instead, the scene is more like a funeral following last week's ugly incident where Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, also the AIIMS president, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, sacked the director of the institute, Dr P. Venugopal, one of the country's foremost cardiologists. "He deserved to be dismissed from the job because he had violated conduct rules applicable to government employees by publicly accusing the Government of interfering in the functioning of AIIMS," Ramadoss said.
