Even as Arundhati Roy was raising a storm in Delhi questioning Kashmir's inclusion in the Union of India, away in her native town Kottayam, her mother Mary Roy, 77, won a protracted legal battle against her brother over a tiny share in their family property. The final victory for Mary Roy came after a sub-court issued execution orders in her property suit on October 20, more than a quarter of a century after a Supreme Court verdict in her favour upholding Syrian Christian women's equal rights with men to family wealth. Now Mary Roy, her sister and her widowed sister-in-law can own nine cents of land each in their family property which was under the custody of her eldest brother George Isaac. The nine cents would fetch Mary Roy more than Rs 10 crore, thanks to its prime location.
