The paper analyzes the formally approved, notified, and approved in-principle Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in India in a number of ways for the period 2006 to mid-June 2009. It outlines the differences in approaches of Export Processing Zones (EPZs)/Export-Oriented Units (EOUs) and SEZs, and presents the features of SEZ policy with respect to SEZ developers and SEZ units, with reference to multi-product, multi-service and sector-specific SEZs in normal states and special category states/union territories. Some current issues, with brief review of earlier approaches, and safeguards to be put in place regarding SEZs, have also been outlined in this paper. Geographical and sector-wise concentration of SEZs, size of area acquired for different product groups, division of zone into processi...

The development cooperation policies of multilateral organizations and the European Union (EU) emphasize essentially the role of social entrepreneurship or Non-Governmental Development Organizations (NGDOs) to achieve sustainable, equitable and participatory human and social developments in the developing countries. The study analyzes the trends in the development sector and the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) position of the development sector in India. The findings indicate that the mission-centered civil society organizations with high strategic orientation hold the key for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and ensuring a vibrant civil society to voice for the marginalized sections of the society in developing countries like India.

In January, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reshuffled the portfolios of several of his Cabinet ministers. These included portfolios of some key economic ministers who had been facing criticism for their inaction and sloth. If Singh had thought the reshuffle would enthuse his two-year old United Progressive Alliance, or UPA, government, he could not have been more off-the- mark. One hundred days after the reshuffle, the seven Cabinet ministers who got the economic ministries - barring S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas - have shown little of either initiative or results. The reasons, in each case, vary. Praful Patel, Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, has been handed a portfolio that does not offer much scope. Murli Deora, Minister for Corporate Aff...
