Going, going, gone: The days of distinguished greyheads as chancellors and deans, with scholarly tomes to their credit, appearing far-removed from monetary concerns. As the private sector and big bucks crowd the higher education sector, your typical dean today could be a guy in an Armani suit, who looks more like a gymfrequenting investment banker than an austere educationist.
And if you thought a university campus means grey buildings, unkempt gardens and stuffy canteens with raucous students ganging up over cups of tea and pakoras, check out the 60-acre sprawl of Amity University at Noida on the border of Delhi. High security gates open into a world of shopping malls (okay, there 's just one) with cafes, bookstores and a L Oreal saloon, and high-end sports facilities. Oh, nearly forgo...

SPOILT FOR CHOICE
Indian universities were often castigated for not offering student friendly, multi-disciplinary education. But one look at some of the course launched over the past few years, might force you to change that mindset, Now a days, progressive universities such as Delhi University (DU) offer courses which give students the liberty to mix and match seemingly disparate subjects. BA (Programme) is the restructured avatar of BA (Pass).

Which was the swivel moment when the Indian-born British citizen shook off his psychological shackles and came into his own? There will probably be as many answers as there are success stories. My personal favourite is the year in which an enterprising Sikh businessman bought out a distillery producing the most sustained, and possibly sustaining, export of the British peoples, Scotch whisky. The breakthrough was not in the financial transaction. Money is the easy part. The revolutionary switch in the balance of power was made when this NRI entrepreneur renamed the Scotch and called it "Kuch Nahi".
You read that correctly. I have neither the imagination nor the gall to make up such a story. I met this enterprising businessman once, nearly a decade ago. When I asked him how he proposed to...

Noida-based Amity Business School (ABS) has broken into the elite club of Top 10 B-schools in the country, doing a double nine of sorts: It's #9 this year, having jumped nine places from #18 last year. But instead of gloating over ABS's new status, Ashok Chauhan, Founder-Chairman, Amity University, talks about the road ahead. "We still have some way to go before we can catch up with the IIMs, he says. "But give us another five years and we'll be on par with the IIMs, he adds determinedly.
Whether Chauhan can walk the talk remains to be seen. But the biggest surprises in this year's BT rankings have come from some of the secondrung B-schools. Along with ABS, Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA) and Welingkar Institute of Management have registered the biggest jump in the ra...

This is Business Today's Third Annual Listing of hottest start- ups and, pretty much like the two previous lists in 2007 and 2008, this listing is also completely subjective. But we did not put the names of the companies drawn by a host of venture capitalists, consultants and even our reporters on a board and throw darts at them. Nope, we took a long hard look at all the names we got and we got a lot and we looked at how viable these businesses would be. So, while a company might have some great guys working for it and a solid idea, we looked at whether it would still be around by the time Business Today's 20th annual list of Hottest Start-Ups comes about.
Did we have any criteria? Yes, we did. All companies, save one, on our list are around three years old or younger. Though MeritNatio...
